Held in various cities around the world, this weekend intensive is dedicated to focusing on the solo movement that goes into partner dancing. The intensive will cover: rhythm, bounce, isolations, arms, commonly used jazz steps, and improvisation.

Next Workshop: May 19-21, 2023

ABOUT

Flying Solo: Lindy Tech
2022

Jo Hoffberg has been running partner dance intensives since 2015. During the pandemic, she had ample time to invest in her solo dancing and is now thrilled to recreate the Lindy Tech environment with a focus on the individual dancer.

Previously, Lindy Techs were focused on partner dynamics and what skills were necessary to better speak and listen to a partner. Going even deeper, Jo is excited to dig into what

makes a great dancer: rhythm, body awareness, dynamics, improvisation, and intuition.

This intensive will focus on what it means to be a dancer, to move with intention, and to be unique in style and voice. She can't wait to see what you create!

Each edition will be held in a new city and the schedule will be modified to best serve each group of students.

Guide

Lindy Hop

Lindy Hop is an African American art form created during a time of oppression and racism. Both the music and the dance were expressions of protest and defiance against the hardships that Black people were facing daily.

Since the 1980s, the dance has largely lacked a more direct connection to the culture from which the dance originated. That's not inherently wrong; however, it has created an imbalance in the values of the current community. "Much of American culture rests on the backbone of Black culture, and to live without acknowledging that robs Black Americans of pride, power, and ability to dream." - Unknown

To participate in this dance is to acknowledge where it came from, who created it, and to honor its cultural values. As many of us are guests in this culture, we desire to not only learn steps, moves, and techniques, but to form a more profound understanding of its rhythm, roots, sorrow, and joy. This is the only way we can contribute positively to its continued development, and provide a safe environment for people of color to feel welcome and appreciated within this community.

IDEAS

The purpose of this weekend is to explore what looks and feels great on your body, not to be a copy of the instructor.

Be inspired by Jo while finding your own voice

The People

A small and intimate learning environment. Great for personalized attention, working in small groups, and learning along side others.

Deep dive

We have time to work, play, explore, and discover what is possible when we entertain new ideas about how to train, move our bodies, and deeply relate to the culture the dance was created by.

Follow up

After the weekend has finished, you'll have one additional week of access to Jo to ask her anything about the weekend, the exercises, and so on.

Bonus Time with Jo will be further discussed during the weekend.
